FC PORTO: Road to VICTORY
History of FC Porto: The Dragons of Portugal
Introduction
Futebol Clube do Porto, commonly known as FC Porto or simply Porto, is one of Portugal’s most successful and storied football clubs. Founded in 1893, Porto has established itself as a dominant force both domestically and internationally. Known as Os Dragões (The Dragons), the club has a fierce rivalry with Benfica and Sporting CP, forming the famous “Big Three” of Portuguese football.
Founding and Early Years (1893-1930s)
FC Porto was founded on September 28, 1893, by António Nicolau de Almeida, a wine merchant with a passion for the sport. However, the club initially struggled to gain traction and was briefly inactive until being revived in 1906.
In the early decades, Porto competed in regional leagues, winning the first-ever Portuguese Championship in 1922. With the creation of the national Primeira Liga in 1934, Porto became one of its founding members.
Despite some early successes, Porto was often overshadowed by Lisbon-based rivals Benfica and Sporting CP during the first half of the 20th century.
Rise to Dominance (1950s-1970s)
The 1950s saw Porto establish itself as a national powerhouse, winning league titles in 1956 and 1959. Legendary players like Hernâni Ferreira and Pinga helped build Porto’s reputation.
However, the following decades were frustrating for Porto, as the club won only one league title between 1960 and 1977, while Benfica and Sporting dominated Portuguese football.
The turning point came in the late 1970s, when Porto began modernizing its structure, leading to a new era of success.
European Glory & The José Mourinho Era (1980s-2004)
Under coach José Maria Pedroto, Porto ended an 18-year title drought in 1978, sparking a new period of dominance.
1987: First European Cup Victory
- Under coach Artur Jorge, Porto won its first European Cup (now the UEFA Champions League) in 1987, defeating Bayern Munich 2-1.
- The match featured the legendary Rabah Madjer backheel goal, one of the most iconic moments in football history.
Porto continued to dominate domestically, but their greatest success came under José Mourinho in the early 2000s.
Mourinho’s Masterpiece: The 2003 & 2004 Triumphs
- 2003 UEFA Cup (now Europa League): Porto defeated Celtic 3-2 to win their first UEFA Cup.
- 2004 Champions League: Porto stunned the world, crushing AS Monaco 3-0 in the final, securing their second European Cup/Champions League title.
- Mourinho’s tactical genius transformed Porto into a disciplined, dominant team, leading to his move to Chelsea shortly after.
Modern Success (2005-Present)
After Mourinho’s departure, Porto continued to dominate Portuguese football and remained competitive in Europe.
2010-11: The Treble Under André Villas-Boas
- Porto won the Primeira Liga undefeated, lifting their 25th league title.
- They also claimed the Portuguese Cup and the UEFA Europa League, defeating Braga 1-0 in an all-Portuguese final.
Since then, Porto has remained a major force in Portugal, competing regularly in the Champions League and continuing their heated rivalry with Benfica and Sporting.
Recent Titles & Achievements
- 2018 & 2022: Porto won the Primeira Liga under Sérgio Conceição.
- 2020 Portuguese Cup: Porto defeated Benfica in the final, reaffirming their dominance.
- 2023: Porto reached the Champions League knockout stages, proving they remain a European contender.

- International Presence – Porto has one of the most passionate fan bases in Europe, filling the Estádio do Dragão (50,000 seats) and maintaining a strong global following.
Legacy & Impact
